  • Aphids

These tiny green or yellow insects multiply quickly & are difficult to get under control. They eat any type of plants, but love succulents & newly grown plants. They feed on plant sap, leaving a sticky residue that can cause mold on plants.

  • Crickets

In warmer areas, crickets often wander indoors and become pesky infestations that keep you awake at night. On top of that, some crickets feed on fabric and can cause damage to your home, clothing, or other items.

  • Earwigs & Silverfish

Earwigs typically eat plants & decaying organic matter, while silverfish eat paper. Earwigs are more likely to live outdoors, but both species can be attracted indoors due to moisture. They both enjoy living in moist, dark, cluttered areas.

  • Millipedes

These crawlers have hundreds of legs & typically live outdoors in damp areas. They eat decaying organic matter like mulch, trash, grass clippings, rotting firewood, compost, and leaf litter.

  • Pill Bugs

These insects roll up into a ball when touched or threatened. They’re reliant on water to survive, which is why they’re often found around damp environments. Pill bugs prefer eating plants that are decaying or already dead.

  • Snails

A snail or slug infestation can be a disaster for your garden. They munch on nearly all plants, causing severe damage and leaving behind sticky trails. Since snails & slugs rely on moisture to survive, your garden can be the perfect place for them.

  • There are a number of reasons common pests may be infesting your home. For one, many of these species love moisture. Sources of dampness could be attracting them and helping the infestation thrive. You could also have cluttered areas in your home that insects use for shelter. Finally, common pests could be making their way indoors through easily accessible entry points. In your garden, it can be difficult to avoid common pests – infestations often occur because you didn’t use proper pest prevention tactics at the beginning of the season.

  • Luckily, these common pests are harmless (although many of these species can be a danger to your garden). However, none of the species above can transfer diseases to humans or pets, and most don’t bite.

  • For home infestations, frequently seeing the pests is the most obvious sign of infestation. Aside from this, most of these common pests don’t leave behind much evidence. For garden pests like snails, your biggest sign will be holes in your plants. Snails will also leave behind an obvious trail of slime wherever they’ve been. Damage from aphids is less noticeable, so you should always take a close look at your plants to see if any insects are living on them.

  • While professional control is the best way to get rid of current infestations, there are plenty of ways to prevent future issues with common pests. Most common pests like to take shelter in cluttered areas. You can help prevent infestations by eliminating as much clutter as you can around the home (and outside the home). In addition to clutter, most of the common pests on this list love moisture (especially the garden insects). They will even move indoors if you have a source of moisture! To ensure this doesn’t happen, make sure to keep your home as dry as possible. You can use a dehumidifier in the basement, bathrooms, and other potentially damp areas. Make sure to check frequently for leaks and fix them right away.
